“a son was born to me and I took him to the Prophet (saws) who named him Ibrahim, did tahneek for him with a date, invoked Allah’s (swt) blessing upon him and returned him to me.” Sahih Bukhari 7:376

When a Muslim couple are expecting a baby, it is important to choose the right name for your baby. While there are thousands of Muslim baby names to choose from it is the decision of the parents that will have the final say, although friends and family always have their input!
Prophet Mohammad (SAW) always chose names with beautiful meanings and even telling other Muslims to change theirs if they have unpleasant meanings. Which name to choose for your baby should also depend upon the meaning. There are some names which some say are old and unfashionable but all Islamic names are timeless and have a unique meaning special to it. Be sure to choose a name which has a meaning that you are both happy with and which means something memorable and will serve the child well into adulthood. By choosing a Muslim name with a strong meaning you are giving your child a name he or she can be proud of, such as Shayan which means ‘praise’ or ‘Reyhana’ which has a meaning of ‘Flower found in Paradise.’ Both of these names speak volumes on their own and once the child begins to grow they can take comfort in the fact they have a name which they can be proud of the meaning.
The Prophet (SAW) had commanded naming a newborn Muslim baby on the seventh day: Samurah Bin Jundub (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, “Every child is mortgaged with its aqeeqah, which is to be slaughtered for it on its seventh day. On that day, it should also be named, and its head should be shaved.”
Some names are intentionally shortened which should be discouraged, such as Abdul will be shortened to Abs by friends. This is not a wise practice as Allah has decreed that on the day of Judgement we will be called forward by our Muslim name and we should not deviate from this path that Allah has written for us.
While there are many beautiful names with incredible meanings there are also some names which are forbidden to be used, such as the 99 names of allah which can only be used with a prefix of ‘Abdul which means ‘Slave of’. An example is Abdul Rahman (Slave of the Generous; Compassionate; Beneficent).
